Tenerife is one of the most populated tourist destinations that still has some great diving but untouched dive sites are hard to be found.
Tenerife is the largest island of the Canary Islands with El Teide National park and its highest peak (3718m) as the primary landmark. The northwest is wetter and greener than the rocky and dry south-east. Southeast touristic towns such as Playa de las Americanas, Costa Adeje and Los Christianos have become popular packaged tourist resorts with excellent beaches and boulevard walks. Nearby, some fabulous windsurfing and kite surfing is done at the beach of El Medano.
Popular tours around the island are visiting the statue of the Virgin Mary in the basilica of Candelaria or shopping at the historic colonial capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife or La Laguna. Tours to the west include visiting the spectacular mountains and views of Masca and taking pictures of a huge drago tree in Icod de los Vinos. The most famous tour is a visit to the Parque Nacional Del Teide with several exciting rock formations, hiking trails and as a highlight, a ten minutes cable car ride to just below the top. Views at the Teide are spectacular from neighboring islands such as Gran Canaria, La Gomera and La Palma, if you are lucky enough to be here when it isn't packed in mist. Pay attention to the weather if you plan visiting the top as it can freeze at this altitude. Tenerife is a very diverse island with snow capped pine forests, barren and dry rock formations but also pristine white sanded beaches and very relaxed and quiet villages.
The underwater dive terrain of Tenerife mainly consists of rocks and sand, with some volcanic caves, walls and arches. Diving is mostly done in the south and west with new dive shops popping up in the resort towns every month. One of the best locations for diving is Los Gigantes next to some extremely steep cliffs. Around the island you will find many ray feeding stations, kept intact for tourist and to encourage growth of underwater life. Butterfly rays, stingrays, arrow crabs, barracudas, angel sharks and huge turtles are some of the highlights.
