Cueva de Palm Mar is one of the most famous dive sites in Tenerife, a deep and not yet fully explored cave.

Cueva de Palm Mar or Palm Mar Cave is a real Tenerife high-light for the advanced diver and yet only 10 minutes from Los Christianos and las Galletas, as it contains everything we long for in a dive; incredible visibility, a very mysterious cave, some deep diving action and a lot of ferocious looking predators! At 16 meters we leave the anchor behind swimming off the edge of a cliff down to the cave entrance at 30 meters. En route we pay a visit to several dark warrens, filled with moray eels, fangs bared, of several different species; the gentle but beautiful Mediterranean moray eel, the impressive yet ugly brown moray and the captivating but fierce looking tiger moray. Make sure you count your fingers at the end of this dive. Despite their frightening appearance these creature are both inquisitive yet gentle.

The cave itself is a Tenerife mystery as no-one knows how long the interior tunnel actually is or where it leads. Several divers have died exploring this cave system and there is a memorial cross outside the cave. With this in mind we take a tentative look inside, just a couple of meters, before moving on. There is an exceptionally nice deep part to this dive taking us to 40 meters, surrounded by large rock pinnacles and garden eels.

The dive site Cueva del Palm-Mar is found about 200 meters off the beach of Palm-Mar, situated to the south of Los Cristianos. We can reach it by boat from either port of Las Galletas or Los Cristianos. Two routes are recommended; one goes down to the entrance to the cave, where a cross stands to the memory of some divers who died exploring it, then moves up the ridge to observe its crevices. The second route follows the ridge where the cave is housed, south until we meet a large rock. Passing this, and another, we reach a third, strangely shaped rock, being narrower at its base than above, on top of which is a statue of a dolphin in memory of Cousteau.

12 meters down there is a rock platform which drops on one side to 25 meters, where we can see caves and crevices. Large rocks rise out of the bed of light sand that slopes gently away from the coast. Seeking shelter in the crevices in the ridge we find morays, and also large brown morays being groomed by small shrimps with long, white antennae.
