Lanzarote is filled with more than three hundred volcano's giving the island its nickname Isla Fuego, island of fire.

Lanzarote, sometimes referred to as the red mountains or La Isla Fuego, is the Canary Islands' fourth largest islands. It has a coastline of more than two hundred kilometers but still she only has a bit more than ten kilometers of sandy beach. And since she is the island nearest to Africa, most sand is imported and flown into from the African deserts. It's volcanic landscape, craters and lava formations have given the island the UNESCO status of World Biosphere Reserve in 1993 and is protected and controlled ever since.

There are many other highlights in Lanzarote. Tourists can explore even more volcanic beaches at La Graciosa, a small island to the north living off fishing and tourism. You can explore the mountains in Timanfaya National Park with some spectacular trails, the islands' highest mountain Peñas del Chache and lots of volcanic craters and activity that looks like walking on the moon. You can visit the green with algae filled crater El Golfo, barbeque on lava and throw water in so called lava holes. Lanzarote is home to the world's largest volcanic cave named Atlantida Tunnel, which is over seven kilometers long. You can taste some wine at the strange volcanic vineyards of La Geria. Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise are the busiest resort areas with enough evening entertainment. Some urban areas worth exploring are the capital Arrecife, Haría, San Bartolomé and Tinajo. Visit the beach of Papagayo or dance in some excellent pubs, enjoy worldwide cooking or entertain yourself with one of the water activities such as diving, wind surfing or water skiing.

Most diving is done off Puerto del Carmen, a great dive destination with steep volcanic walls, some spectacular wrecks and several interesting offshore reefs filled with tropical fish. It is year around diving for novice, advanced and professional divers. Water temperatures can reach 24 degrees in summer and drop to 18 degrees in winter, but diving shops are open at any time. Angel sharks, groupers, moray eels are some of the common inhabitants of diving here. Warm African currents have provided this region with reefs and many tropical fish. Lanzarote is a nice island with some interesting dive sites but many other holiday activities as well.
