Outside the dock of Puerto de la Cruz, 600 meters west of the wharf, there is an impressive underwater volcanic formation named the Cathedral or la Catedral. The recommended routes here lie between the 20 meters-deep platform of the ridge and the 40 meters to the sandy seabed. Two routes are distinguished by depth: The first stays above the 25-meter mark, on the surface of the platform, exploring the upper arches around this formation. The second, for experienced divers, begins on the cornice of the ridge, which we follow eastwards, descending a stepped bank covered with red sea fans to an archway leading into an arena surrounded by vertical walls. Climbing through one of these we emerge behind another small arch. Returning along the surface of the ridge towards the wall opposite, we can explore yet another incredible arch which lends this formation the aspect of a great, Gothic cathedral.
There is a rocky ridge here, with volcanic formations providing a very attractive under water landscape, especially on days with good visibility. Parrot fish, rainbow wrasse, Turkish wrasse, etcetera are common and feed on seaweed on the rocks, while morays, glasseyes and arrow crabs hide in the crevices. We can also see white bream, almaco jacks, guelly jacks and on the sandy bank of the ridge there is a colony of red sea fans, and stingrays and wide-eye flounders.
